Didn't they do their research before getting them, or do trendy people just get them on the spur of the moment - regardless of the consequences.
Tattoos do age too.

I think you answered your own question. There have always been bad tattoos and bad tattooists (a.k.a., "scratchers") but as tattoos have become more popular and accepted among mainstream society, there are more of both out there (and it seems as if the bad tats are the ones that get shown off the most; lucky us!). There's also unprecedented access to good artists and unlimited design ideas, so there's no excuse for this crap.

I think you're pretty much right. Alot of people do stuff because it's popular, or because it seemed fun at the time...and then don't think about how to care for it or how it's going to look in 5 years, etc. Unfortunately that's how we as a society are and I don't think it's ever going to change.
