Why is the Inheritance Trilogy (Eragon, Eldest, etc.) so popular? From a critical point of view, it is bad literature and terribly unoriginal. Why are the books so popular?

Ever since Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter and similar fantasies have gained wider audiences through becoming films, and everyone's jumping on the bandwagon, meaning they're ripe for any teen fantasy series that's out there. Add to that the fact that it was written by someone so young, which bought Paolini some publicity, and you've got a bestseller.

I don't like it and I agree, it is very unoriginal and not that great literature, particularly from a critical view. I don't mind that people like it, except that so many other, really great, original fantasy books don't get any recognition that they deserve!

I'd very much agree with your critical point of view, and I've asked the same question. SO the best answers I can give are that the books are easy fantasy that can serve as an introduction into the fantasy genre. They interest those who don't read much, and are written by a teen so they also help fellow teens think that they can follow through on their dreams and succeed and such. Publishers love that whole thing, and so they publicize them more, and people enjoy them as good reads, not as amazing work. I can't remember what the last answer that I got was, but I asked a sixteen year old and he said something along the lines of that they were easy to read and had a great plot. I think that those who are most interested are those who don't possess the time, patience, or ability to read the more acclaimed works of fantasy, so they can still get the idea of it. Make sense?

Because there are a lot of people who have taste different than me.

I personally find it to be adolescent fantasy trash that appeals to the anime-fascinated set.
