Just stop feeding her for a few weeks. That weight should come right off. Forget the therapist. Isn't there a naughty corner she can sit in until you start feeding her again? Perhaps you can wait until she's 3 so she grows into the extra weight. Let her have some water, though, and fat-free breads here and there. Not every day, of course.

I would not think a diet per say would be a good idea. The weight of two year olds varies SO much ... and she's 5 pounds over what? The average for her height? Because if you stop and think about it, close to half of people are over any given 'average' and the other half are under it ....

If she eats a lot of junk food or drinks a lot of fruit juice (more than 4-8 ounces a day), feel free to replace those things with healthier choices. Also, if she's fairly sedentary, I would suggest adding a daily physical activity, such as a family walk or just outdoor play time, to your routine. But if she is healthy overall, has a good energy level, eats a healthy diet and gets a normal amount of exercise, I wouldn't worry about it--weight should not be nearly as important as health.

I hope that's helpful!

Diet implies restricting calories. That is not healthy for a two year old. She need lots of high quality fats for brain and organ development. She is growing quickly at this age so she needs lots of calories too.

I would look at what she eats and make sure that there is a lot of variety in what she eats, and it is "good" for her, with a decent nutritional value. This is not "dieting", but setting her up for having good eating habits as an adult.

I would not worry about her weight too much right now. Toddlers and young children tend to "pack on the weight" right before a growth spurt. My daughter is like that. One morning she seems "chubby", the next day she is skin and bones again and much taller.

In the end, weight is not very important, but healthy eating habits are. (Some insurance policies will pay for at least one nutritional counseling visit per year for families with young children.)

You're kidding, right? If you put her on a "diet" now, you're going to set yourself up for a child with eating disorders for the rest of her life. She'll hit a growth spurt soon enough and her weight will balance out.

How about doing something like playing with your child? Get her a Big Wheel and you walk with her while she pedals along. Cut down the amount of juice and refined sugar she has - make it for special occasions only - eat nutritiously otherwise. By having HEALTHY eating habits and an active lifestyle now -those are habits that will stay with her FOREVER.

No, your daughter should not go on a diet simply because it could be dangerous to her health now and in the future.

However, if she tends to eat a lot of junk food; feed more vegetables and fruits to her instead. That way, when she's older, she will be able to eat healthier.

Other than that, diet should not be the answer. Instead, you should possibly engage in more physical activities such as sports.

5LBS OVER WHAT???!!! Unless her doctor has said something, leave her be. If you start obssessing about her weight she will grow up obssessing about her weight. If she is still drinking whole milk, switch her to skim. Feed your family healthy foods (no, the chicken nuggets and apples from McDonalds don't count). If everyone eats healthy, she will too. If you are concerned, talk to her doctor, but unless she looks more like a beach ball then a baby YOU LEAVE THAT CHILD ALONE! Girls in this country spend too much time being told that they are not good enough (not skinny enough, boobs too small, hair the wrong color), don't make it worse. Help her learn to listen to her body and live healthy, not MTV.

No definitely don't put her on a diet. Just start choosing healthier foods, and also choose some active activities for her. It also is the winter so it isn't as active of a season. Spring and Summer you have the park so she can play there.

Absolutely not! If you are really concerned, bring her to a pediatrician and get checked out, but for 5 pounds I would say no way. Trust me, in a year she'll be running so much that she'll have 5 pounds burned off in no time.

OMG NO!!!!
She is TWO----it's called BABY FAT!
She will grow out of it....she needs plenty of food to be healthy, and a diet at this stage is very dangerous.
Not to mention that you're setting her up for a HUGE body-image issue later on.
Just leave her be!

If by diet you mean:
Only feed her healthy whole foods like:
Whole grains, vegetables, fruit, lean meat, and dairy... while avoiding processed foods, refined sugar, sugary juices, trans-fats...... then--yes. By all means put her on a diet.
If by diet you mean: Restrict her calories:
Absolutely not.
