These assignments are not supposed to test your knowledge of how to do something, they are supposed to teach you how to give a presentation in front of other people.

The most successful presentations of this sort focus on something the student does often, and knows well. Just make a list of things you do all the time, and pick one. Some examples:

How to tie a shoe
How to put on lipstick
How to make an appointment with your advisor
How to decorate a dorm room
How to kill a bug
How to ask someone for a date
How to fry an egg
How to sharpen a pencil
How to make a martini
How to manage a hangover
How to make flowers out of kleenex
How to compose a haiku poem
How to remember the 9 multiplication table
How to draw a stick figure
How to piss off your best friend
How to wash a dog
How to fail a class
How to peel an orange
How to feed a college student on less than $5 a day
How to get into credit card debt
How to get your parents to bail you out of credit card debt

Notice that all of these suggestions are relatively simple tasks, but they also have the possibility of using props, and using humor. Props and/or humor will make your presentation interesting. Props can also help you focus on what you are doing, and laughs from your classmates will help you relax and do a better job overall.

Bottom line: It's not what you choose to explain, it's how you choose to explain it.

Good luck -- you'll do just fine!

I'd suggest picking a subject you already know plenty about, so you'll be comfortable talking about it. Could be anything - how to fix an engine, how to bake a cake, how to build an igloo... just something you yourself enjoy doing. Then, just break it down. Explain it step by step. Try to think of interesting ways to describe what you mean, rather than just being really factual. This will bring the subject to life, and make it less dry and dreary. (For example, if I were telling you how to bake bread, I might describe kneading the dough and then say that you know it's ready when it feels as though it's broken out in a cold sweat. It's a descriptive way of putting it that makes you feel much more connected with what I'm talking about).

Try to relax, and have fun passing on your knowledge!
