I'm white, but I've never figured that out.... I know it's a rude, derogatory racist reference, but where does it come from?

Because during slavery African American slaves would call the White man with the whip the "cracker" because the whip cracks, he's cracking the whip. So as people still say the n word which was brought up by the slave owners and all, cracker is used as well.

ummm....crackers are white (except for ritz and a few others that were not out back then when the expression began to get used). i don't know...just threw something out there

Crackers refers to slave owners (they "cracked" their whips). The "n" word refers to people from the country Niger. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Niger
