I think if i did have a Girl, i won't really get so caught up in the holidays just to get her something and make her feel special. It should be special throughout the whole year, but i was still wondering if you guys treat it better than your spouse's birthday...

Valentines day like all the other holidays was created buy store owners to increase business. They mean nothing but getting more money from people like you in there pockets. This is why the rich get richer and you get poorer.
If they had a jump off a bridge day, would you jump. Stop being a follower and start being a leader. If you get something for someone get it because you want to, Not because its a holiday
and feel obligated.

Yes, I agree a home cooked meal is the way to go. But if you are not much of a cook, you could do semi-homemade, get prepared food at the deli section of your super grocery store and plate that up at home for him. Be sure to have some kind of chocolate for dessert too, that's a tradition as well as an aphrodisiac! A Valentine's card that matches your feelings will be appreciated by this special guy.

I think the birthday should trump everything, and be the most special.

Valentines day is strictly about romance. That should be the most romantic gift, most romantic dinner, romantic movie, etc.

The birthday gift can be something more exciting, adventurous, thoughtful, expensive, wonderful, practical, and celebrated by all members of the family and circle of friends, where valentines is just more intimate and romantic, just the two of you.

Spend more on the birthday gift!

No. Just like Christmas, Valentine's Day seems to have gone completely off the track and is basically the money thing now.

No. Valentine's Day is just a way for businesses to make more money, though I'll take any excuse to celebrate.
