We are running a classifieds advertising site but we get lot of spam mails - the site is developed in Java - how can we track and if necessary block IP addresses? Can we also trace from a email its originating IP? Can anyone help?

Hi

Ok , first what you want to do is TRACE-OUT the ip so theres a couple of things you can do , one will be to have tcp port watcher and ip anti-scan, that way it will tell you from where it comes from .Also go here , www.tucows.com or www.networkingfiles.com

Most of that information can be "forged" by the professional spammers so you won't be able to stop the worst ones (they change apparent IP addresses often).. but most firewall software is capable of blocking sites.

Hi. The "professional" spammers usually go through proxy servers making it tough to track and block them. You can get information about an emails source by right clicking and selecting 'Properties'> Detail> Message source. You'll find most are hidden pretty well.

Should be able to talk to your mail provider and block any mail from that sender even if they change their name...if you are using a free mail service..I think your sol.

Mail provider would be your hoster if you have a mail address from your website.
