Basically, you want to get all the things that have letters on one side and all the things that don't have letters on the other side. To get rid of things that don't belong on one side, you just do the opposite action. (eg. if it is +5, then you do -5 to get rid of it). BUT, then you have to do the same on the other side of the equation so it is still equal.
Kind of like this....
q + (-10) = 25
so, we want to get rid of the +(-10) since it doesn't have a letter and doesn't belong on that side. So, we do the opposite. The opposite of adding -10 is subtracting -10.
q + (-10) - (-10) = 25 but this is still not finished since we haven't done the same on the other side
So, the final thing is this...
q + (-10) - (-10) = 25 - (-10)
the two -10 on the left side cancel each other
q = 25 - (-10)
subtracting a negative is like adding a positive
q = 25 + 10
q = 35
Fill it in to check...
35 + -10 = 25

Solve for "q" > q + (-10) = 25
First: eliminate the parenthesis....
q - 10 = 25
Sec: isolate "q" on one side --- add 10 with both sides (when you move a term to the opposite side, always use the opposite sign)....
q - 10 + 10 = 25 + 10
q = 35
