This is caused by the rotation of the planet. Every object that rotates, has a bulge around the equator. Even the Earth is not completely spherical but has a small bulge at the equator and flattens a bit at the poles.
The faster the rotation, the more prominent the ellipsoid shape becomes.

Is that just how the pictures look, or have scientists actually said that it flattens out near the poles and is wider at the equator?

If it's the former, it's just how the picture was taken. If it was the latter, my bet would be because of it's gravity, but I'm going to go with that it is the way the picture was taken.

Earths surroundings displays solar extra whilst the solar's gentle isn't creating an instantaneous hit. shall we say that the time of year is the two the spring or the autumn solstice. this ability that the solar's rays are hitting the equator, and over the equator might in all possibility be the warmest place on the earth. And the farther north or south you circulate, the solar may well be reflecting off the ambience, and the solar's rays might ought to commute by means of extra surroundings formerly hitting Earth. the ambience is made out of tiny debris that mirror the solar lower back into area. So the fewer surroundings the solar has to circulate by means of, the hotter it is going to likely be on the floor.

It is cold at the Poles and Hot at the Equator. I think it would have something to do with the climate in those areas.
