A body floats because decomposition gasses trapped inside the body make it buoyant.

Gud question...

Hmmm...i shud say Yes and no. Or rather no and yes. Or rather, first no, then yes, then no. A newly dead human being, or any other animal, will sink when placed in water. After the gases of decomposition build up in the chest and abdomen, however, the body will inflate, rise like a hydrogen-filled balloon, and pop to the surface, sometimes dragging with it surprisingly heavy weights that a murderer might have thought sufficient to keep it down. With the passage of time and further decomposition, however, the body cavities eventually rupture, the gas escapes, and the corpse goes down again, this time for good.

There is one notable exception: sometimes, due to air caught in the clothing, a body will stay on the surface for several hours before sinking.

Anyway....

As a general rule, . a cadaver in the water starts to sink as soon as the air in its lungs is replaced with water. Once submerged, the body stays underwater until the bacteria in the gut and chest cavity produce enough gas—methane, hydrogen sulfide, and carbon dioxide—to float it to the surface like a balloon. (The buildup of methane, hydrogen sulfide, and other gases can take days or weeks, depending on a number of factors.) At first, not all parts of the body inflate the same amount: The torso, which contains the most bacteria, bloats more than the head and limbs. The most buoyant body parts rise first, leaving the head and limbs to drag behind the chest and abdomen. Since arms, legs, and the head can only drape forward from the body, corpses tend to rotate such that the torso floats facedown, with arms and legs hanging beneath it.

If u drink water equal to ur body mass, note mass not weight, what will happen? That is what actually happens with dead body. When mass of water exceeds that of a constantly degrading body, when the density of the body starts to become below of that of the constant density of water, the dead body definitely floats!

Actually this ques. is meant to be asked in the Physics section. The inner decomposition of the body n the consequent release of decomposition gases results in decrease in the avg. density n thus increase in the vol. of the body. Since vol. increases, upthrust provided by the water (given by the formula Upthrust = Vol. of body x Density of liquid x Accl. due to gravity) increases, which makes the body to float, as upthrust becomes more than wt. of the body.

it is because of the increase in volume of the dead body, because of the water which gets in it and the decomposition gases. due to this increase in the volume the body receives more bouyant force and it floats on water (remember archimedes principle)

Its a matter of density, not weight. Because the atoms in our body, mainly carbon, have a lot of empty space between the nucleus and the electrons, and also because they themselves are spaced farther apart than the atoms of the water. This causes buoyancy since the body is not as dense as the water surrounding it.

As a body decomposes it releases gases which accumulate in the body cavity. The gases are what causes the body to float.

air is blocked in the body and still more being produced while decaying thats what it makes dead body to float

afte death the blood starts clotting.... and therefore the liuid part present in our body becomes solid ....thus the body floats... same as with ice n water.... ice floats above....
