I am trying to get into the Business internship program (Co-op program), and one of the things they want in their application is a personal statement (i.e., letter of intent). I want to write one that would stand out, so I want to ask what I should put in the statement. It would be a real bonus if you guys can provide a website for sources, as well. Thanks a bunch!

Speaking as a business owner of twenty years, & former Chamber of Commerce President, my advice would be to follow your heart!!

Why DO you want to participate? Put those feelings into words !!Nothing will be as powerful as your inspiration for applying to this internship program.

What makes the program appealing to you? What benefits do you expect to take with you after completing the program, & how will this affect your future career choices.

Everyone else will "borrow" someone else's words. You will truly standout through written expression of your sincere desire to be in the program, & appreciation for what you will take from it.

Good Luck!!

Some things right and some things wrong. First off, don't begin "Hi". Begin: Dear Professor Smith (or whatever name). That paragraph where you explain who you are and remind the professor of what courses in which terms you took is excellent. Forget about the next paragraph, just drop it. You also need to be more specific. Are you looking for a letter of recommendation given to you that you can use? No, that is not how it happens. You need to know what intership(s) you are applying for and to where or to whom and when letters of recommendation must be sent. Provide that information in your request to the professor.
