bluetooth is a protocol that is used to connect bits of hardware. e.g. a wireless keyboard may use bluetooth to connect to the computer.

The most common use of bluetooth is mobile phones to connect to other phones or computers to transfer files / photos etc

Bluetooth was developed by Nokia and named after a pirate

Bluetooth is a short range, wireless technology, usually with a range not more than about 20 feet, depending on class. It is not just restricted to cell phones or wireless keyboards and mice. The neat thing about it is, because it is short distance and low power, it is unlicensed, meaning ANYONE can use it in their devices without special considerations. The signal is weak enough to not interfere with other devices, like the 2.4 MHz cordless telephones interfere with wireless computer switches. Also, because the signal is weaker, it uses less power than other means and saves battery life. Ofcourse, the downside is that it is limited to such short distances.

Recently, many more devices have included this wireless technology, to include printers, which allows one to print pictures from a cell phone or properly equipped digital cameras without cables or media cards.

One of the biggest advances has been business type devices that connect via bluetooth, such as portable credit card scanners that connect via bluetooth to a cell phone to process credit card payments. Contractors that come to your home can accept debit or credit card payments on the spot, helping companies keep there A/R balances lower and saving fees, as merchant charges are usually lower on a card that is scanned, versus a manually entered card back at the office.

Another example could be a restaurant with this technology can scan your card at the table, instead of taking your card back to "who knows where" and bringing it back. The card stays within eyeshot of the customer and could reduce credit card fraud, as the short distances reduce the ability to intercept the signals. While Wifi could also be used inside a fixed area with no power consumption issues, these signals are usually stronger and travel further. Some argue that wifi has better security, but what is better than a signal that another can't intercept because of distance? Plus, the "master" device still has to accept the "slave" before it will communicate, meaning the operator would have to allow a rogue device to participate in the network.

Also, since bluetooth typically performs "frequency hopping" (rapidly changing the frequency that it uses), it is unlikely to be intercepted by a thief and reduces interference from other devices.

bluetooth is wireless connectivity for cell phone headsets.
instead of a cell headset with a cord the bluetooth technology allows for wireless headsets to be worn and the cell phone can stay in a pocket or holder or purse. some bluetooth headsets also allow for answering call remotely from the headset.

Bluetooth is a wireless way of controlling devices, such as instead of holding your cell phone to your ear, you can talk without the phone to your ear. Or you can control your laptop via bluetooth.
