I think an uncircumcised penis is disgusting and they smell, trust me I had two boyfriends that were not circumcised and it was disgusting. It is the ugliest thing I have ever seen. I work in the OR as a surgical tech and do about 3 to 5 of these procedures a day and can tell you that after assisting on these for almost 17 years YES THEY DO USE ANESTHESIA UPON THE REQUEST OF THE MOTHER so if your baby didn't get it it's your own fault. And, NO they DO NOT NEED IT in the first place. If any of you so called well knowledge people actually knew the anatomy of a newborns penis you would know that they have no nerve endings in the tip of their penis yet therefore, they cannot feel it.

FYI if it is mutilation then it would be illegal. It ruins the stimulation huh.....all of low life sex driven man whores I have ever come in contact with (circumcised at that) have had no problem with being stimulated and having sensation. That is crap. If this was the case men wouldn't have such a hard time being faithful and would not have the urge to run around and sleep around.

We chose not to circumcise our sons. We think that it should be their decision and most of the time the hospital doesn't even use anesthesia for the babies. Our pediatrician said that there was no difference between the two except the cruelty of the circumcision itself. We struggled because the boys' dad was circumcised and we were worried that they would want to look like dad but then again, we don't have the same exact traits as our parents and we just grow up accepting it. You can never UN-circumcise the boy and so it really should be a choice he makes. When they circumcise adult men, they use anesthesia and pain medicine and it is usually for religious reasons. As far as hygiene, the uncircumcised penis is easily nd quickly washed under and protects the penis from virii, bacteria, and the urine and feces in a diaper. When they are erect, the foreskin of adult men slips down under the head and make no difference in the man's ability to feel sex etc. My husband sorely wishes that he had not been circumcised (I'm not sure why exactly but I respect his concern and respect for our sons' feelings).

I have been researching circumcision for a friend of mine...it seems like the are more reasons to do it than ever before. Not only does it preven penis cancer, it even helps prevent cervical cancer:

A good listen on NPR:

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=1141513

Circumcision is hard when left to be done when he is older. My younger brother needed a circumcision later in life and that wasn't fun for him and took almost a month to heal....compared to my boys they healed up in a week. I should add that modern circumcision is not painful for boys; here is a good link that shows an actual circumcision:

www.circumcisionvancouver.com

Men seem to like being circumcised. And, talking to my girlfriends I know women expect them to be circumcised. I've only had one uncircumcised boyfriend and he was pretty embarrased about it, not to mention it was the only time I ever got yeast infections. Its too bad there is so much fear mongering out there...its a pretty simple procedure and well worth it. Some other interesting health benefits :

http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/fishman/2006/circumcision.html
http://edition.cnn.com/2006/HEALTH/conditions/12/13/hiv.circumcision.ap/index.html
There is actually evidence of more sexual dysfunction in uncircumcised men:

Talk to your doctor, read the links, and hopefully that will help...it is one of the harder decisions a parent has to make.

Lots of love,

Pros for circumcision:
* Circumcision lowers chances of getting a urinary tract infection in the first year of life.
* Although a rare condition, cancer of the penis is essentially eliminated by circumcision.
* Research shows that males who are circumcised have a slightly lower risk of getting sexually transmitted diseases.
* Circumcision eliminates foreskin infection that can occur at the ages of 3 to 5 years.
* Circumcision prevents phimosis, a narrow opening that makes it impossible to retract the foreskin at a later age.
* Genital hygiene may be easier after circumcision.

Cons:
*Any surgical procedure has risks (improper healing, cut improperly - though rare if done in a hospital)
*Some people believe the foreskin protects the penis from irritation
*Some people believe it desensitizes the penis

My husband and I chose to circumcise our son because it was important to us that he look like his father who will be his male role model for life. Why have to explain to a child why he looks different from his daddy in that way?

Cut50 - The information had nothing to do with a comparison to girls as only boys are circumcised in the US. Girls get more UTIs because of their anatomy which is OBVIOUSLY different from a boys.

I said nothing about PREVENTING STDs. Read again. It says decreased risk.

Yes, we have soap and water, READ AGAIN; it said hygiene may be EASIER.

How could decreased sensitivity even be measured? Perhaps if done as an adult, but circumcision done at or just after birth will have neither psychological nor physical scars. By the way, my deepest sympathies that you were "mutilated" at six. Had we not chosen to circumcise at birth, we would have stuck by that choice.

The information is just that and it was harbored from a site written by pediatric urologists last updated in 2007.

I condone nothing but personal choice of a FAMILY which is why there are pros and cons. Obviously you would have everyone do things as you choose and negate choice. Just as I will not let my child choose to ride his bike w/o a helmet, eat pork or shellfish, and all the other family cultural norms we will raise him with, we chose to circumcise him. You will choose what kind of life your child has, let others choose theirs. Thank you very much.

CDN your reasons are out of date!
Girls are more likely to get a UTI than an intact boy, just give them antibiotics, they don't cut girls.
We now have soap and water for hygenie, girls need to learn how to wash too.
The cancer of the penis is no more common in the developed nations that do not circumcise than it is here. Smoking is more of a risk for cancer of the penis.
Circumcision is not a preventative of STDs or HIV, safe sex and the use of condoms prevent STDs.
Competent doctors can treat the rare problems that an intact penis may have without cutting. European doctors rarely circumcise (they must be better trained)
If an uncut son was to compare penises with cut dad, just tell him, we didn't let the doctors cut you like they did dad. The boy will not mind at all!

A bunch of BS reasons to mutilate your son!!

You should realize that there is a very real risk of loss of sensitivity for the man, and other bad effects, as this study shows.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?db=pubmed&cmd=Retrieve&dopt=AbstractPlus&list_uids=16037710&query_hl=2&itool=pubmed_docsum
Excerpts from the report:
Masood S, Patel HR, Himpson RC, Palmer JH, Mufti GR, Sheriff MK.
OBJECTIVES: Currently no consensus exists about the role of the foreskin or the effect circumcision has on penile sensitivity and overall sexual satisfaction. Our study assesses the effect of circumcision on sexually active men and the relative impact this may have on informed consent prior to surgery.
Penile sensation improved after circumcision in 38% (p = 0.01) but got worse in 18%, with the remainder having no change. Overall satisfaction was 61%.
CONCLUSIONS: Penile sensitivity had variable outcomes after circumcision. The poor outcome of circumcision considered by overall satisfaction rates suggests that when we circumcise men, these outcome data should be discussed during the informed consent process. 2005 S. Karger AG, Basel

One out of five men circumcised suffers loss of sensitivity and one out of three is not satisfied with the results, these are not very good odds. I would point out that while this study shows that adult men should be warned of the possibility of sensitivity loss before they can give "informed consent" to circumcision, there is no way that a newborn boy can give his informed consent to an elective procedure that has a 1 in 3 chance of leaving him with an impaired sex-life.

His body. His choice.

NO BODY NEEDS TO HAVE SURGERY TO PLEASE SOMEONE ELSE!

I think momoftwoboys answred this question beautifully. I am from Britain where it is not done, and why American's want to mutilate their little boys is beyond my understanding. It's not done anywhere else, so why is America so caught up in this whole cutting off of the foreskin when no-one else does? I have never heard of anybody having to get circumsized when they were older in England.
