actually, Campbell's rookie season was 1978. He won the football writers MVP, but not the AP - that went to Bradshaw.

Generally, the AP award is the one that has the most significance.

Earl Campbell won the MVP, rookie of the year, and went to the Pro Bowl in his rookie year of 1979.

rookies have their own category for MVP. You would receive the Rookie MVP award.
