My home wiring has 2xblack 2xred +earth. The light has blue brown + earth. Connecting 1xblack - blue 1x black - brown connect earth isolate 2xred on 4th block. Initial check light worked but when installed it didn't neither did the wall lights in the room. Fuse OK not blown.
Something is clearly wrong.Any ideas?

The red wires should be live and the black wires should be neutral. There are two of each because they are part of a ring main.

On the light fitting brown is live and blue is neutral.

It sounds as though you have connected your light up to the neutral circuit and broken the circuit too.

That is why the wall lights are not working. Your new light is not working because there is no live going to it.

Try this:

Connect the earths together.

Keep the two reds and two blacks together then try connecting the brown wire from the light fitting to the reds and the blue one to the blacks.

Electricity can be dangerous. Make sure the power is off before attempting any work and if in any doubt, get someone who knows what they are doing.

Doesn't really sound like you do.

If everything was working fine before you installed the new light,it's probably the connection you've made...Now if you have 2reds and 2blacks the connecting is fairly easy and is as follows. the 2reds join together in a connector on there own, now that leaves the 2blacks,one will be a neutral and the other will be switch live. The switched live is the one that goes to your switch, this will connect to the brown, the other black is the neutral and will connect to the blue. The earths all join together. This is how it should be if your house is wired in PVC twin and earth.

It's hard to tell, without being there, but here's what I know:

1) The 2 black wires should be unswitched "hot" wires.

2) The 2 red wires should be switched "hot" wires.

3) You did not mention a white wire; this should be the common, or "neutral" wire.

Best bet is to take the information to your nearest Home Depot, OSH, or other home improvement center, and ask them, or have a qualified electrician take a look at it.

Difficulto to say from a distance but you seem to have a two-way switch, i.e a switch which is part of a pair of switches which can each independently switch the light on or off, whatever position the other switch is on if you see what I mean. Hope this helps.
