so why are so many lebanese so fake? they try to hard to become westernized and they forget their own roots. it seems like they'd rather speak french or english instead of arabic. they don't look natural anymore...the women with their plastic surgery and blonde hair. i dont know, its pretty sad. it seems like the lebanese over here (america) are more lebanese than the ones in lebanon. i just wish they would be more cultural rather than trying to be like the rest of the world. what are your thoughts...and by the way im not trying to bash the lebanese...cuz i mean im lebanese.

Finally Apparently I'm not the only one who thinks that (yes I'm Lebanese).

Copying western culture does not exactly mean you're civilized, and I do mean strongly by the word "copy" not "influenced" I try to dig some research about what was unique in our culture since the ancient times, yes we have been influenced before many times but we were able to evolve and twist these influences to create a new identity not because we do it like everybody else but it helped us evolve and create at least some new way of thinking.

Globalization doesn't necessarily mean "let's all be ghetto gangstas/heavy metal/emo...etc youths imitating accents and giving an image that we are civilized just because we watched the series of friends and listened to old Metallica albums..etc"
and I'm seeing that a lot everywhere on an international scale (Asians mostly by where I a now), It's like we are in a huge state of denial.

What's even worse is that before people use to base their actions a lot like by what Social rules and etiquettes without knowing the reasons whether symbolic or practical, most of them practiced them by fear (whether to not being an outcast or dealing with social consequences) and yet they retained some humility in their actions (though other sort of influences used to take a long time to reach) (my personal opinion anyways yours can be very different I don't mind, and I understand).

However our generation of Lebanese are throwing away whatever
traditions we had that gave us identity probably 50 years ago and backwards, instead of filtering/adapting/evolving them out through practicality, symbolism, or humility. And we are nearly mindlessly copying but what pop culture tells us through cosmopolitan magazines or by the recent fads, and unfortunately many people are basing their actions but what's cool (to be accepted by peers instead of being respected by them by who they are. accepted and respected are two different worlds apart)

So my conclusion is that a big chunk of it is peer and social pressure, and escapism.

I hope I gave you something to think about and thank you very much for reading this even though I came close to ranting.

I think that's one of the small things we have unique in our culture (we like to rant/talk a lot to blow off steam and/or to be listened to ;) ) ...(or maybe that's just me)

why do people always have this idea about the Lebanese? i mean we are different from the rest of the Arab world because we are more open minded to a certain extent and that's why people from the rest of the Arab world come to us all the time. This idea about Lebanon isn't new and it has been floating around since i don't know when, especially since Lebanon is (or was) called the Switzerland of the East. So our existence can only be completely covered up or be westernized? no in between? For a Lebanese person, you should be the last one to throw this accusation at us since you know that we Lebanese people still hold our traditions at heart and live very much the way we used to a long time ago.

The way we speak arabic with English and French is because we are exposed to those three langages in school. We don't do it on purpose but sometimes cuz you speak more than one langage it's difficult to find the words so you use the one that pops into your mind it could be English or French. Just so you know in Tunisia Algeria and Morrocco they talk Arabic mixed with French...it all depends on the culture you get influenced by.
We don't try to be weternised...we just are who we are...we are not like any other country in the world...we are unique, I guess...maybe not in a good thing but sometimes being different is unaccepted.
In US Lebanese are more Lebanese cuz they have only 1 langage English and if they know Arabic they try to speak it perfectly to keep their roots and stuff like that.
As for plastic surgery, Lebanese take care of their looks...almost everybody is in shape, we exercise and we diet and we look good and dress good...we like to do that. As for blond hair, it's not "in" at the moment, red hair is...lol...but seriously there are lots of Lebanese with blond hair and blue eyes...I have blond hair and green eyes, my father had red hair and blue eyes...I married a typical Lebanese and my oldest son has straight brown hair and big brown eyes, my second son has big blue eyes and blond curly hair.
Maybe you are right that it's sad that we take care of our looks that much, but that's the only thing we can do freely and that's something we enjoy...people here are good are being hairdressers, make-up artists, jewlery makers and couturiers.

Sorry we disapoint you...

Sometimes you just have to accept things in life. I know there are plenty of fake blondes in Leb, but there are also a lot of natural beauties, some women are more gifted than others, its just the way it is, so what if some people get some surgery to help a little imperfection? Having said that I do understand what u say about entertainers looking the same; it does kinda start to annoy us but dont forget the media is like this all around the world, there is strong competition to look young or stay thin or wear expensive designer clothes everywhere. Its like personal grooming, if everyone visits the hairdressers\takes care of their looks does this mean we are fake? I agree with kate saying that moroccoans mix french, I cant help but mix english but thats only a habit its not because I am losing my roots at all. I guess it is a matter of opinion I guess but I do think there are more important things in life to worry about!

People change by time, you can't have a steady culture forever and mostly all the Lebanese here in Lebanon whatever they do they still follow the old Lebanese culture. I think you haven't been here recently.

Lebanese american here, and ur right about most of them . They seem to have a superiority complex, they are very close minded and they think they are better than everyone else, but u are wrong in saying the lebanese here are more lebanese than the ones in lebanon, they are the same as they strive to be like the lebanese in lebanon. Lebanese have taken westernization to the total extreme. Give me a nice american woman any day of the week instead of a shallow gossiping lebanese woman

I dont agree with you. They are not fake at all.
Have you ever heard about globalization??? That it is about. For you is easy to talk as you do, because you are in the middle of the place where all that nonsenses and stuffs for women start. If a star in Hollywood has the hair yellow........be sure that many women around the world will do it, without care about is if nice or not.
Why lebanese women have to be different??
Women are women without care where we are.
I have seen in Lebanon, beautiful women with their hair dark......as typical lebanese, but have seen also clear skin women that changed their hair to blonde.
In spite of she is only half lebanese...I dont like what Shakira has maken with her hair. When she has her own dark hair was nicer.
Not all the women are able to get blonde hair. But....you cant generalize either. About to speak arabic with french and english words......what do you want?........lebanese people has been under french domination for more than 50 years.. The french is a "gift" they got from them.
I like to see how much educated they are......and that are the best dressed in all middle east. The roots and the culture arent in the hair or in the clothes... Culture is to know how to cook lebanese food.....or how to dance dabke.....or how to open your house to give another people hospitality. I dont know if all the lebanese like you..are able to do it. Culture is something deeper.......and you have it in ur brain and in your heart.

By the way.....I'm lebanese, but didnt born in Lebanon, I'm western, but be sure that I'm as much lebanese as the ones bornt in Lebanon, and kept my lebanese culture in spite of that.

We need to give the Lebanese people some credit.
we have for the past 30 years lived in constant turmoil, lived in constant fear, under attack, under occupation and an insecure present or future.
things are still not looking any brighter.

The best way to cope with this? escapism. you escape your reality ( or try to, I should say) by becoming someone else. and the easiest way is to change your appearance and identify with people who have a more stable life (the west).

Lebanese who don't live in Lebanon don't face these daily insecurities, therefore don't have the need to alter their reality.

you are right????
some lebanese are so fake. they prefer to speak English or Frensh more than Arabic. I think they should be proud of themself because they are Arabic.
for wxanple Star Academey: Tina, she speaks English all the time. she thinks that she doesn't speak Arabic good. eventhough she has an accent in English.
do you know staracademey????

u r right??? that's make me sad.
Im lebanese but I live in U.S.A
I like to speak my language because I lreally love it.
some lebanese like to be like American people. free, blonde hair. I don't really know why. Arabic people are more cute and hot than American people.

ok. have a good weekend.
