Well its more quieter Than yelling or stomping and you can control it if its loud or soft, the ideal way to show the way you liked something.it probably started way back in the 18 th century with the rich folks watching a play and giving 2 or 3 taps with there hands together.

They must have seen seals do it and just copy catted...LOL
I guess it's got to do with making noise. Voices likely get sore after a while and some people aren't up to screaming and shouting. Maybe they started with banging on a drum or something and realized they could make noise, and loud noise, if they all clapped their hands simutaneously. I think it's almost an instinct to do so.
My guess is cheering became a refined type of gesture at some point in history and likely came to be with the theatre or something that commanded a little more etiquette, like in the presence of royalty or something. There are many gestures in society and it's probably hard to pinpoint the how's and where's and likely has to do with cultural upbringings too.

Well, I am sure some answerer will look up the answer on the Internet and let you know all the facts. However, I just want to clap my hands in excitement as my forefathers did, since it is socially acceptable. Clap, Clap.
