What you get paid depends on the work you do. I have never worked for minimum wage, even when in high school. I am now an employer in my own right. My employees are paid what they are worth and what I can afford to pay them. But, my employees are all educated with jobs skills and superb work habits.

If you are uneducated or unwilling to put in a good day of work you aren't going to earn as much as a person who has spent the time to become a valuable assett to the company they work for. It really is that simple. You cannot expect somebody to be highly paid to flip hamburgers but a skilled chef is very well paid. That's because a customer will only pay a couple dollars for the hamburger but will willingly pay $100 for a well prepared steak dinner.

Twenty or so years ago there was an airline that was arguing with the labor union about wages. The Union finally went on strike and managed to force a major wage increase from the airline. Within a year the airline went broke and all the employees from the CEO to the janitor lost their jobs because the wage increase could not be supported.

The moral is that there is only so much money to be had in a business. Wages are almost always the single largest cost to operate. It isn't unusual for a 10% increase in wages to force cutting something else, like advertising. When you start cutting things like that the company can fall into a death spiral.

I have always made a decent living and so has anybody who ever worked for me. But I've never worked in a fast food place either.

There are choices in your life that you make all the time, sure, life doesn't seem fair all the time, but if you take a look at what you've done for yourself, is it enough to get to the level of where you want to be? If you're short on education, you've got to pick yourself up and make that the priority. Don't get mixed up in self pity and hopelessness. You knew exactly how much you were going to get paid when you took your job, so why are you complaining about it? Pick yourself up and do something about it. I understand we all have to complain every once in a while, but don't complain about an employer because you think he's doing better than you, do you think the executives just sat back and waited for decent employment to call them? Most likely not.

Someone is obviously willing to do the work for the wages that are being offered, so really the question should be why do people settle for less?

Businesses are always out to make a profit and they are helping the community by providing jobs. If you do not like the pay you are currently receiving, I suggest you put yourself in the market for a new job.

Well any honest person knows you can't earn more than your worth. Besides there's more involved than just the Employer and Employee there's also the customer to concider who may be just as needy as the employee.

What is a living wage anyway. Your life was a gift but your continued survival depends on your effort and the choices you make. A truly honest person knows they cannot consume more than they produce.

We (i.e., the working class, and the group formerly referred to as the "middle" class) are SCREWED. Collectively, we are the proletariat at the mercy of the bourgeoisie. And those, like myself, with advanced degrees from CLASSROOMS (versus online.... no comment) are especially screwed. Our Master's Degrees and PhD's have no value in this materialistic, capitalist society. We're punished for being over-educated. Is it my fault that i was raised on "Free To Be You And Me"??? King Bush and his cronies have systematically destroyed any hope for us of ever attaining the "American Dream." We'll be paying the baby boomer's mortages/extortion (i.e., rent) until maggots eat our flesh. Please elect Senator Obama. He cares about us. And he is very aware of the dire state of the working class.

They would rather pay us CRAP or send our jobs over seas. We as Americans are being starved! Where did these corporations learn this? From the benefit package enjoyed by the House and Senate.
