once in spain i was taking a dump and all too late realised there was no toilet paper........... i ended up trying to wash myslef clean in the shower but it was not very successful........so i was just wondering if a bidet is just as useless at cleaning up afterwards??

ok after seeing some of your answers using toilet paper and then using water makes sense. I just couldn't see how squirting water alone would do much. how common i am haha

Depends on the bidet.

There are several bidet attachments that have very effective sprayers. They were designed for people who have difficulty or absolutely can't wipe at all due to a stroke, arthritis, paralysis, injuries, amputaton, neurological / neuromuscular disorders, obesity or whatever. I have one of these models, and it absolutely does the job. I only use paper to dry (I'm usually too impatient to wait for the air dryer to do the job).

Well a "Bidet":A basin full of water (and a good soap) should do the job. However I'd suggest carrying toilet paper with you the next time. The same thing happened to me once in Cuba at a resort of all places.Used the bathroom without looking to see if there was toilet tissue first, and guess what, there wasn't ! After that I made sure I carried it with me whenever I went into a bathroom. As a matter of fact, when we visited Havana on a day tour they were actually selling it outside of bathrooms, because there wasn't any in the toilets. Those people are real entrepreneurs in the truest sense of the word. And guess what , there was no Bidet inside of those bathrooms! Go figure?

In Europe these are much more common, and yes, they do have them in some public toilets. Most of them nowadays use a jet - obviously can be painful if you haven't got the water temperature just right! Incidentally, you sit facing the wall! In Egypt the hotel we stayed in had them combined with the toilet (most Moslim countries have a flexible shower thing at the side of the toilet for this purpose) and I was fascinated by the tap at the side of the toilet and turned it on. Whilst I am sure it worked perfectly when sitting on the toilet (the right way round) with no butt on it it shot up in the air and soaked the floor! In European hotels there are usually several small towels (the size of wash cloths) on a rail near the bidet. In Japan (and you can buy them in Europe) they have toilets that work like the Egyptian toilets but they have a warm air dryer incorporated as well. Have fun!

No actually a bidet is very effective at cleaning up. The best way to use a bidet is to actually use toilet roll first a bidet is generally jut for extra hygiene!

yes a bidet would be far more accurate than a shower if you sit back to front on it and manouvre yoursellf into a position where the jet of water comes into direct contact with the task in hand .

Bidet are much more hygenic and less harmful to the environment as you use no paper, you simply wash away your mess. You may need a flannel that can be boil washed after.

My gran and grandad had one, we used to wash our feet in it when we came back from the beach, to get the sand off.

When my cousin ( who's now 43!!) was a little boy he visited their new house for the first time and thought it was a small toilet like the ones at school.
My gran had to scoop out the little "suprise" that was left!

Aah.... happy days.

Bidets are great. Sadly we do not use them enough in the UK. They are fantastic for washing one's 'undercarriage' after going for a pooh or for after sex. Very quick, saves getting everthing else wet in the shower.

Of course washing is far more hygienic than wiping!
Say you got dog mess on your hands - would you wipe it off with a piece of tissue then carry on eating your sandwiches! or wash your hands thoroughly in soap and water!
Same rule applies.
