Always wash them in cold water and dry on low or medium. All cotton is high shrinkage so dry on low for sure. Poly-cotton blends will not shrink providing the polyester % is 50% or higher. Polyester cannot shrink, so the higher the amount, the less shrinkage you have to worry about! All poly content allows you to need no special care when washing at all! But do read the labels and wash accordingly.

Todays detergents will work at cold temperatures as well, so I'd advise that you wash them at 30 degrees and line dry them, not only will you be saving your clothes from shrinking, but you'll be using less electricity by washing cooler and not using the dryer, so you can be helping save the planet at the the same time.

Wash them in the gentle cycle in the washing machine (cold water wash & rinse) followed by 15 minutes max in the dryer, then hang them up. You may need to use the regular cycle spin at the end to get rid of excess water soaked in the clothes.
Years of doing this has kept my sweatshirts and other cotton garments in the same size, as well as reduced fading.

it isn't the temp of the water in the washer. it is the dryer that shrinks things.
polyester rarely shrinks enough to tell any difference.
if you have a poly, cotton blend, then yes it will shrink. the amount depends on the percentage of cotton in the garment.
try drying on a LOW HEAT setting for the shortest amount of time posible.

I have stocked up on the hangers that clamp, and all my sweaters, sweatshirts, and most of my pants, ALL avoid the dryer.
Take your sweatshirts out of the washer, pull them into shape, and let them line dry. If you don't have any clamping hangers, you can drape them over your shower rod.
..and Yes. Polyester, shrinks less than cotton. (Though i pull most of my polyester out to line dry as well)
