The contraceptive pill is sometimes prescribed to people who have extremely heavy periods, accompanied by debilitating period pain. One of the effects of most contraceptive pills is that they make your periods much lighter, last a shorter time and have less associated pain.
However, other reasons for the menstrual problems would need to be ruled out before deciding to just prescribe the pill to sort it out.

Uncontrolled periods. I've dated several women who had to take the pill due to their periods being sparatic and not on time. It regulates your period to the natural times. My ex had been taking the pill sense she started having periods.
