You already seem to get on the internet. This is good. Unfortunately you havent told us how you connect. You need a broadband connection like DSL or cable or something like that. Dial up won't work.

If you have a router that can connect several PCs (maybe even wireless) to the internet, just plug in a normal Ethernet Cable to the router and follow the setup instructions of the Xbox onscreen.

If you only have one dedicated DSL or cablemodem, I highly recommend buying a router.
However you can get a so called "Crossover" Ethernet cable to connect the Xbox with your Windows PC. Run the Internet Connection Sharing assistant on the PC and the Xbox can connect to the Internet via your PC.

However, your PC has to be running while you play games online on the Xbox, wich will cost you a lot of electrical power.
A router will use about 6-20 Watts energy. A normal PC will use over 150 Watts of energy.

Your electrical bill will thank you for getting a router. Furthermore you can always add more devices (e.g. Friends coming over with a WLAN Laptop or another Xbox can connect to your Network and you can play together).
