Or more accurately, the difference between a Mustang and a Mustang GT.
The Trans Am was typically outfitted with more power and more desirable options, which makes them more likely to end up in an accident or a victim of theft, which in turn makes the insurance higher.

Trans Am is a Hotter and more collectaable engine/suspension combination. Engines were of a higher performance than the stock models. Extras were a real top of line models.
Often able to go faster quicker. Saw the 1969 TransAm Firebird's---0-145 mph on speedometers. 20 mpg tpp. 455 cu.in. engines if so ordered. Rear-ends were hot to. high speed ratios. Insurance is a real killer--had a 442Olds Cutlass with 455 bore to 501 cu in and 856 street horses; originally dinoed at 1400hp and had 4:11 rear end ratios. Put in Racing rear end from the Chevrolet Racing group at 2:43 and had a freeway mpg of 24-26 through mountains of western Oregon. Medford to Portland. Made one trip in time of leaving at 4:15 and arrivinng at 7:05pm. appx distance is 189 miles.

Well...
It's like the difference between a plain Mustang and a Shelby Cobra.
the "Trans Am" series Firebird has a long and storied tradition of speed, power and handling. "Trans-Am(erica)" racing involved long-distance, curves and endurance.
The Firebird Trans Am was a premium version in the tradition of the GT Mustangs and SS Camaros, GTO (Tempest) and other muscle cars.
These were not just larger engines, but beefier transmissions, suspensions and tires.
