Take a short walk outside, take in everything you see, and when you get home, write a full page without stopping. Not of poetry, but of prose, scratch that pen across the surface until your wrist hurts. Then go back through the paper, underlining anything that seems interesting. Anything that surprises you, any well-turned phrase or interesting simile or metaphor. Then use that as a controlling idea for the start of your poem. However, don't let that dictate where the poem goes. Sometimes, your subconscious will work things out that are quite cool and worth writing about, but you need to find a way to let it flow. That usually means getting out of the way of your own critic, your own rational and systematic mind.

Poetry works more in image and association than it does philosophy or rhetoric or pure meaning. Let the play of sounds, of interesting syllabic interplay dictate where the poem goes. And, equally as important, don't let the truth get in the way of your writing. Poetry can be "false" and still ring true in a much more important and meaningful way.

Also, read read read contemporary poetry. So many good ideas come from reading what's currently being published out there. An image used in a Suarez piece might lead you off into your own musings about a similar image, and from there a new poem may start to materialize.

Good luck.

I've written a few poems and had a few of them published so I can tell you that poetry comes from the core of who you are. You can't write about what you haven't felt or experienced. Think about the last time you felt real emotion and then start describing it. My best poems have been written as a memorial to a loved one who died but I can also feel emotional about a dead tree, bird or a rock. My rock poem was pretty cool. I just started thinking about how hard a rock is and how tough it would be and how long it would take to change and what all the rock has seen as it has been changed by the wind, water and the sands of time. Compare that to how soft and easily changed a human is and you will have a poem. Good luck!

You can say how the old man came with two very beautiful women and he sat down and started to play at his quitar, the music popped up from the quitar and started to haunt the people from the little town, a bar tender, then a guy with a 12 year old girl talking in the street , they all started to dance enchanted by his magic music. In the end the old man called his music back and all those people were stolen into his quitar. Sad but true, except the young girl who managed to escape. Then the old man left with the two fairies. And the poet who watched this as witness hidden in his car left too. In fact this is step by step visual of one video of Juanes--Song <"La Camisa Nera">.Listen to this song, see the video and write the poem.Possible poem title: Mistic Music. Or the Man from the Mu,MU=like in theTHE legendary LOST CONTINENT

Nature is always good inspiration. Use the season's to describe different times in a person's life or for certain emotions,i.e., During the summer of my life...winter came through the cracks in my home leaving me cold and alone..etc.

You could write about the wars going on...for some reason pain is a font for creativity, especially personal pain. Love is as well.
My favorite poet-philosopher is Khalil Gibran. His book "The Prophet" is wonderful.

Themes for poems:

Nature--the shape of clouds at sunrise
snow falling down
watching a waterfall slowly freeze
one bird chirping on a cold frosty morning
boulders covered with moss along a hiking trail

Love--the feelings you have for one not here
first love
old love
eternal love of God
love as a flame, a fog, the sweetest breath

Emotions--anger
melancholy
peacefulness
worry

Humor--the antics of a small child
interaction of old and young
interaction of people and animals
humanizing non-animate objects

hope you get some ideas from some of these

If I could save time in a bottle
the first thing that I'd like to do
is to save every day 'til eternity passes away
just to spend them with you

if I could make days last forever
if words could make wishes come true
I'd save every day like a treasure and then
again I would spend them with you

if I had a box just for wishes
and dreams that had never come true
the box would be empty except for the
memories of how they were answered by you

but there never seems
to be enough time to do the
things you want once you find them
I've looked around enough to know that
you're the one I want to go through time with
I hid you for a long time
the way a branch hides its
slowly ripening fruit among leaves,
and like a flower crystal of ice
on a winter window
you open in my mind.
In my heart I keep
the sparkle of your eyes
the tender warmth of your smile
the small tilt of your head
the delicate curves of your soft body
and I dream
dream of holding you close
caring for you, protecting you
and loving you always.

When I think of love ...
I think of roses and red hearts ...
quiet walks ...
and very soft, tranquil music ...
I envision an eagle taking flight on a crisp fall morn ...
the first snowflake in the winter ...
and the sound of the first robin in the spring ...
I envision a glorious sunrise ...
a spectacular rainbow ...
and stars brightly shining on a summer night ...
But most of all, I envision you ...
your eyes radiating warmth, joy and vibrance ...
and the tender feelings in my heart
from your friendly smile.

Get a copy of "Writing Down the Bones" by Natalie Goldberg. It's one writing book that has never failed to inspire me.
