I'm in the UK, we don't have Black History Month. Interested to know what happens, how it's celebrated etc.

That's an attempt by US educators and politicians to give some positive attention to Black people's contribution to US history and culture, during the month of February. It's an attempt to make up for the negative attention given during the rest of the year. During Black History Month, there are lessons in schools and on TV about prominent Black people.
It's also a time to promote commercial products such as hair and skin care products, etc. It's the American way, to celebrate something or call attention to something by selling special products, for example, pink items during October, "breast cancer awareness month"
