We need a new socialist workers party where the MP's only take the wage of the average worker, Labour was founded on working class values but has solt out to corperate muscle (cash for peerages? it was an early goal to abolish peerages not sell them!)

Who governs the governers?
"The people" is the simple answer, but "the people" don't have any say at all in the amounts of cash they award themselves. And do you notice how silent the opposition parties are when parliamentary pay is being discussed. No-one ever says that they are being paid enough, let alone too much, and all I hear are demands for even more than the party in power is suggesting in the "pay round".
I'm sure someboby will know. When was the last time that Parliament gave itself a raise that was no more than the rate of inflation, using the same rate that they suggest is appropriate for the rest of the country? I would hazard a guess at "never".

I agree, but we have very little choice at election time. I just try to pick the lesser of two evils. What got me most was those same people turned down a raise for minimum wage earners. That really took some nads, in a bad way, to do that.

it was voted and put into law a mandatory "cost of living" increase every year. they dont even vote on it anymore it is automatic.

the problem that I see that no body talks about is that on the floor right now (I dont know who put it on I'm still looking but it is a Dem) is trying to pass a law that if ANY CONGRESSMAN speaks out to try to put legislation or words in the record AGAINST THE PAY RAISE he is automatically stalemated on their salary until a majority of congress votes in favor of their position. So if it never gets voted on that member can have 0 pay raises as the others get theirs.

Wonder why they did this?

It will not ever end. Power makes them drunk with corruption.
I agree only a national referendum will work. Write your Congress! Do it every week. If everyone did this, they would have a referendum.

It will only end when there is a national referendum where the people can say emphatically - Enough. Of course, this will not happen.

All the bums should be tossed to the curb!!! It won't happen because everyone is happy that their representatives brings pork to their home area. WE are the ones to blame for putting up with such garbage!!

If you had the ability to give yourself a raise whenever you wanted, would you want to give that up? I'm not saying it's right, but probably impossible to change.
