I work in a Holistic Health shop and my boss gave me a pair of Hopi Ear Candles to try out.

Weird sensation! All I can smell now is smoke and my ears feel really weird!

How did you feel after using them and did you find them effective in treating your illness or health conditions?

My grandmother used to make her own ear candles and use them on friends and family members who were suffering from earaches. They did work with no unpleasant feelings.
I don't quite know how it worked, but it did.

I had this done last night at my hair salon. Here is my experience: I have suffered from an unknown ear condition (severe) for over 5 years now. I have seen over 4 different ear specialists and all of them told me my ear was fine. I decided to try the ear candles because what else could go wrong. My ear constantly feels like I'm in an airplane, and it is constantly "closed" like I have no pressure. I even thought for awhile I was slowly becoming deaf in my right ear. The first specialist I saw actually pulled 6 pieces of cotton away from my eardrum. He said it had to be there since childhood because it was incredibly compacted against my eardrum with ear wax. I couldn't believe it! That gave me a bit of relief in my ear, but not like a normal ear should be or feel like. So, it always feels like I have more cotton in my ear, but I he said I didn't. The candling was amazing. It pulled out huge chunks of wax like I wouldn't believe, which had COTTON mixed in with the wax (from q-tips)! I didn't know one ear could even hold so much wax. Now remember, the ear specialists told me I didn't even have a drop of wax in my ears, let alone any more cotton, either! It also coaxed out a lot of yeast (powder substance that eventually turns into the solid wax). I'm still in awe! It didn't hurt one bit, and it relieved a ton of pressure in my ear! I will now sware by this procedure I'm so convinced. This solved a five year chronic problem I had within 45 minutes, and it only cost me $30.00! Amazing! Now how can you idiots explain the cotton in the wax? Was that just from the candle stick also? Don't put a procedure down unless you've tried it yourself! Good luck to everybody else.

They work because the heat breaks up any build up caused by wax or puss associated with glogging behind the eardrums. I had an old roommate who swore by them and many other holistic remedies. But I have to wonder if they might not only be easing a much more serious problem. I mean, perhaps if it's just a small thing, the ear candle will take care of it. But if it's something more serious, the relief you experience may only be temporary, and you could end up with a much larger problem than you initially had. I'd wait it out. If the ear candle doesn't work after one treatment, I would then consider seeing a doctor.

Holistic treatments are great, but I think there's something to be said as well for standard medical treatment.

Many members of my family have been using ear candles for years. It's amazing, and gross, the stuff that gets pulled out of your ear and into the candle. I find them to be very effective in keeping my ears healthy and I haven't had an ear infection since I started using them, despite allergy problems. I don't know why you're only smelling smoke now, but the feeling is weird for an hour or so after using them.

Personally, I use the candles as a preventive measure rather than wait and have to go to the doctor for an ear lavage. My sister is a nurse and she's told me of some of the nasty stuff she's seen come out of patient's ears when they have this done.

And FYI, quick relief for an ear ache is to have someone GENTLY blow cigarette smoke into the affect ear. We had to do this several times with my daughter, before she got tubes put in her ears, when she would wake up in the night with an ear ache. It would settle her right down and allowed her to get some sleep until we could get to the doctor the next day. I don't know why it works, but it does.

the hopi ear candles are great but i wouldnt recommend that you treat yourself with them - purely for a health and safety reason

they are great in helping with sinus and ear problems

you should take it easy for a while after using them - dont be rushing around - and as with all alternative theraphies drink plenty of water after the treatment

I had a large client base that really found benefits from this wonderful treatment and my daughter really loved having them done. I also had it done myself...I do make a lot of wax, get sinus problems and headaches...I found the treatment so relaxing, followed of course, by a facial massage...it was soothing, my ears felt much better and my sinuses were greatly improved. You don't really need to go and spend the ridiculous amounts some unscrupulous therapists charge for this treatments, friends and family can do it just as well...and I am a trained qualified therapist yet my daughter did the treatment on me just fine. The main reason I would recommend them is that the method of syringing my gps actually kills the little hairs inside your ears that help clean them, thus making wax build up even more of a problem resulting in a need for further syringing!! Go on you guys...take the plunge, you don't know wot u miss until you try.

C'mon guys - read some of the debunking tests on the web. Some tests are very simple - use an ear candle on one of your ears, then just burn one out in the open air. The tests have found that the waxy residue and powder is the same in both.

There are also some very involved tests that also prove their is no truth to the claim that any wax is removed from the ear. The ear system is not connected to sinuses or your brain or anything else that is claimed for ear candles.

There have, however, been cases of hot wax dripping on the ear drum and surgery being required.

You may receive some soothing sensation from the warmth of the candle being in proximity to your ear, so if that is what you are looking for, knock yourself out. Just don't blindly believe what someone (who by the way is generally selling you something - unlike me) tells you.

Are you referring to the ear candles for cleaning wax from the ears? If so, I have used them several times and they are very effective. You need someone else to light and attend the candles for you.

Hope you didn't use them both at the same time!
I have used them on clients and as some of them relax and fall asleep it is best not to use them on yourself. I did have treatment while training (holistic therapies) and had a sore throat and tonsillitis afterwards, this is not uncommon.
