well for starters a lot of schools don't use cad until their junior year, which means that their will be a two year gap in technology, so I would recommend not buying one until he absolutely needs one, even then I don't use my own computer for doing cad work I use the lab, becasue I am often drawing in studio, why not walk ten feet to the computers offered? If a school requires one, generally its a good idea to do what they say. If you really need one ask the school about the likely hood of them switching to macs in the duration that he's there. Macs are better at graphic design yes, but you can still buy a pc for much cheaper than a mac. Also worth noting that architecture firms are in the swing of using revit, which will run much better on a pc, because you won't need to have two operating systems in order to use it. Hope this helps. I would personally buy a desktop, their cheaper, and flash drives can be used to move your sons information around between his dorms comp, if he happens to do work in his dorm, and the architecture labs computers. Their is plenty of space for a desktop in dorm living trust me, I wish I would have saved a grand and bought a desktop instead of my laptop.

contrary to what people say about getting macs, if your son is going into architecture then he's better off with pc, only because of the required programs that he'll be using. yes, macs can now run windows programs but to make the technical explanation short, it would also run slower (just a little, but still). if the school requires that your son get a laptop, they should have a list of required hardware and softwares he should have in his laptop. inquire the school.

If you're going to Bestbuy, Circuit City.. Most any computer will pretty much work. But I would go with a Laptop. .Just incase he needs to take the thing to class with him.
If you're going through a computer resale shop. You'd need to know exactly what your son will be doing with it/Class related and for that, you'd need to talk to him and/or his Professor(s).

might I suggest an Acer Aspire 9400...It is a very good lap top with lots of capability and it costs several hundred dollars less than the main brans. My wife just purchased one and love it. this was her 2nd laptop. Her first was a Toshiba..it did well but was very expensive too...her Acer out performs it by several miles.
for my money I would get the Acer....

He needs an Apple computer. They are much better for graphic arts, art, and design/architecture than regular p.c's that run windows.

A Macbook. It can run Windows programmes as well, if necessary. Max out the RAM however.
