My '00 Pontiac Sunfire has recently gone through a HORRIBLE cold spell in Buffalo, NY . It's run fine for a long time, but this past week it's been dying on me.

It starts TOTALLY fine and runs fine to start with. However (for example) I drove all the way to an interview, stopped the car, left it for an hour, got back in, started fine, then drove off- I was waiting to pull into a plaza and right when I started to tap on the gas pedal it quit in the turning lane. Oil light went on.

2nd time it happened: Started up, drove fine, drove around for a half hour, then had it idling in park outside a store and it was idling rough... you could hear it like the RPMs were revving then slowing, Revving and slowing... We drove away just fine, drove for another 15 minutes, then parked outside the house and then the car died. Oil light comes on.

Any suggestions?!!?!?

I know AutoZone does a free electronic engine check... but if my engine light isn't coming on, does that mean there are no codes that would show up? Or are there still codes they can check for even if they don't affect the engine light?

Plug wires, Plugs and air filter, It could even be moisture in the gas causing a blockage in the fuel line but that would be more at speed than at an idle but it wouldn't hurt to add some dry gas. If The tune up doesn't help it my need a Mass Air Flow sensor or a new Coil pack. The oil light is most likely coming on because the car stalled and thats normal so don't worry about that unless it comes on long before your car stalls. Good luck I live in central NY currently 3 ft of snow. looks like we have you beat for once!!

If you have made sure your spark plugs, distributor cap, and all wires are in good condition. Then the next thing i would do is replace the TPS sensor(throttle position sensor). Also your in line fuel filter could be plugged. If that isn't it then it also could be your fuel pump. The best thing to do is take it to a shop and put it on the machine that gives you a read out of exactly what is wrong. I owned a 1983 z28 Camaro with fuel injection. I don't know if that helps but those are some of the things I replaced in my camaro. Good luck

Heres some things you should do:

1.Do a full tune-up. Replace distributor cap, rotor, spark plugs. Then change the oil with somthing such as 0w-20 or since its so cold.

2.If that doesnt do the trick, run some fuel injector cleaner in a tank of gas.You can get it at any gas station. I reccomned Prestone

3.Your EKG might be all messed up. Take it to a midas or somthing and get it checked out.

If that doesnt work, then get it checked out.

change your fuel filter then add a can of fuel injector clean next fill up.
fuel filter clogged acts pretty much as you described and usually won't turn your check engine light on.
could also be a little water in your gas. when changing fuel filter just drain into something and look for water. if there is water add a can of heet this will help disperse the water.

O2 sensor, MAF (mass air flow) sensor, or TPS (Throttle Position Sensor). Need to read actual data from the computer to determine which one is bad. If it were a Honda or Toyota, they would've thrown a code but gm... is very forgiving when it comes to their screw ups.

your car has a DIS system - you have no distributor cap or rotor.I would check the EGR valve.

Sounds like that wicked EGR valve to me but you should have it serviced before someone rear-ends you .
