Normally the heating is fine; the timer turns it on and off successfully and the thermostat works. However sometimes the heating stays on even though the timer (which appears to be working - lights go off) switches off and promptly goes red hot and the thermostat no longer works either. Any ideas?

Element relay is sticking. Trace the large wires from the element BACK to the control panel. where they attach to the strip is the relay. Tap on it with the handle of a screwdriver to release the contacts. You will need to replace the relay.
