Locate the humidifier on your furnace. See if you have to change the water filter, inside the humidifier. Most likely you do. Its a good idea to change the other filters also. The two filters, one upstairs, in the return duct (vent), & the other inside the furnace unit itself. If your unsure call a a/c & heating specialist. Buy the filters that you can use over and over again by simply washing them in the bathtub or sink. Dont use the fiberglass disposables. The float switch might be in the stuck position also. The humidifier is usually on the side of the Large duct on the suction side, the return. The humidifier has a dial a flow knob that controls the amount of water to be administered to the unit. The dial should have a percentage rate distribution mark in intervals. Bring a drop light to your unit and a flash light and locate the above. The thermostat regulates temps / on & off. Always have humidity in the winter, you breath better. Too much humidity causes mildew and that will make you sick. Cleaning the duct work is not cheap. Proper regulation is a must. In the summer there should be a butterfly valve to shut off the flow of air, besides the dial, by the humidifier. If you have no dial a flow knob, regulate the incoming water supply to the humidifier, a petcock, to balance the moisture. If you have a problem, e-mail me the specs, make & model etc. Let me know how you made out!

Should be a dial-type switch on the furnace ducting right near the humidifier... turn it to off... or way down to a low level of humidity... should do the trick

Do not turn off, there should be a humidistat on the ductwork in the immediate area of the humidifier. Just turn down to a lower setting.

You simply need to adjust the humidstat and turn it down to a lower number. Humidifiers should be turned on in late fall (November) and turned off in April. Never run them in he summer months.

There is a dial on the thermostat that is more than likely screwed to your duct work [where it should be] Turn it to it's lowest setting, that would be off.
