There is no political justification for discrimination in a Democracy. The only political argument is where the social and the political cross over. There are some economic reasons...like lost tax dollars, companies having to pay out benefits, etc....but there is no political or moral justification for the economic discrimination to begin with. Homophobia is based on hatred and fear. Frequently justified by religious fundamentalism. There is no moral justification for homophobic policy that does not go something like "God said it's wrong".

You wont find one... Because the people who preach against gay marriage do not even know what they are talking about..
examples that we have all heard before:
1. marriage is a religious institution between man and woman.
Ok well if its so religious how come someone can go to the JP and get married? If it is so religious how can atheist get married (inside or outside) of a church? Also if it is a religious thing then how come after so many years living together a hetero couple are considered common law married? and after so many years you have to get a divorce if you want out of the common law marriage.
2. It will destroy the meaning of marriage..
Ok what exactly is the meaning of marriage? to me its binding a relationship with the person you love with everything you are made of. To share your life with the other person as a married couple.
3. It will destroy married couples..
Sorry but the only one who could destroy someone marriages are the people in that marriage.. Allowing same sex marriages will not turn every gay.
4. Think about the children first...
Ok thought about it, now what? Why cant children be raised properly with 2 moms or 2 dads? children are not being raised right by hetero couples. why do you think there are so many unwanted children?
5. Same sex couple can not reproduce.
Yes and neither can sterile hetero men and women. Should they not be allowed to marry? Plus someone in a same sex relationship can reproduce.. IVF anyone? or why not allow us to adopt some of those great children that were put up for adoption that came from hetero couples not wanting them?
6. same sex marriage is unnatural..
So is wearing glasses, so is a deformed child at birth, so are deseases, so are mental illnesses, so whats their point here?
(BTW THIS WAS NOT AIMED AT YOU)
The point is they can not come up with any legit reasons other then their own beliefs,

I get so angry about this subject. The argument about procreation? Well, there are people who cannot have children and people who choose to not have children. I guess they can't get married, right? And if marriage is a religious institution, then why are athiests allowed to marry?
Then there's the "choose to be gay" line. If someone is truly straight, would they choose to be gay? Why in the hell would someone want to do that? You're attracted to who you're attracted to. The point about "what's next" - marrying children, animals, dead people, etc...give me a break! What consenting adult humans do IS NO ONE ELSE'S BUSINESS!
Bringing religion into it is ridiculous. I don't believe what these fanatics do. There are so many different beliefs in this country. Laws in the United States should not be based on religion.
I'm straight, by the way. I just happen to have an open mind. If I had to label myself, I guess I would say I'm an athiest. And guess what? I'm a good person. Can you imagine??

The only "political" reason is that the majority of the voters aren't gay, so if you can turn them against gays, you can get their votes by campaigning against gay marriage.

there are No political reasons why,its the sanctity of marriage for a man and a woman, Gay marriage should be refereed to as a union, and given the same rights as a married couple...that's what I believe not that it matters, but as for politics the polititions are simply trying to voice that of the people and unfortuntaly many people have not been educated and looks at gays as sort of an affliction...shame on them...

There aren't any. None at all.
All arguments against LEGAL Gay Marriage are purely religiously based or simply illogical with regard to our Constitution.

There aren't any political reasons... People just throw religion in our faces just to have another reason. I mean, damn, we are just people for God sakes, and if someone doesn't like gay marriage, well then don't marry the same sex, it's as simple as that!

I will be watching this question myself, I would like an answer to it as well. All I see is that the economy would prosper from it. To file joint taxes together, purchases would be in both names, and the biggest of them all, if there was a divorce, both the lawyers and the government make the $$$$$$. Good question and I will be interested in what people have to say!!

Pretty stoo-pid issue anyway as marriage rarely works for straights, and gays change partners so often, just what do they want. The institution of marriage is just that = worthy of being put into an institution. Divorce rates show that 50% straight divorce would be an embarrassing 99% for queers. Let's just go for legal civil unions and not associate ourselves with a "word" that means sh&it for christian brains anyway.

There are not political reasons to ban gay marriage, it is just a bigoted idea. What I don't understand is why people keep fighting over this, when it is clear that it is going to happen soon in America, just as it happened to the rest of the world.
