You may have been hearing about the Saturn opposition. It's nothing special. Saturn is always visible in the sky, except when near conjunction with the sun. It's brightness doesn't vary much because Earth's distance to Saturn only varies by about 15% or so over the course of the year.

Saturn is in Leo right now, forming a triangle with Regulus and another bright star. It appears as a fairly bright yellow star in the sky. You need a telescope to see it as a planet.
