I bought a Maxtor 300GB hard drive for use with our Sony DV camcorder. Unfortunately when I tried to upload from the camera I get a message telling me that the write speed is not fast enough on the drive. Instead I have had to use the 60GB drive that came with the computer and then move the huge files to the big drive, which has now been a total disappointment. The packaging on the Maxtor drive claimed to be great for movies and music, but it seems to be a total bust. I am curious is write speed something that is adjustable on hard drives or are they typically set at one speed from the factory?

Just to clarify this is an internal hard drive. Thanks for any help.

No you can not speed up write speed. Now I bet the 300 GB is like 5200 RMP speed and the 80 Gb drive is 7800 RPM speed. So when you buy your HDD next time look at the speed of the drive now.

My guess is, this a USB drive. If it is, make sure it's plugged into a USB 2.0 port, not a 1.1. Also, USB ports usually come in pairs or groups of four. Speed is shared among the ports. Pull everything from the adjacent ports and try again. If you're using a hub, you're splitting the speed yet again. Go direct to the PC.

SO.... Plug the drive into one USB 2.0 port, plug the camera into another one from another group. Unplug all of the other USB devices (as a test).

you probably cant speed it up if you want to keep the warrenty and keep it working

the little motor inside that spins it around only goes so fast so youd have to get a new one and put it in or way over power the old one both of which would almoust definately break it

It is not possible without major exchanges of components, you are better off buying a new one.
