I don't know how old you are, but if you have ever heard of the band called Ten Years After and the lead guitarist, Alvin Lee, then hears a great little riff that's fairly easy to play. Go to
http//:www.ultimate-guitar.com
and click on the "T" at the top (everything is alphabetical), it will bring up a list of songs, you want "Love Like A Man." A real easy, but cool little riff to play. You can also try a song called "I'd Love To Change The World." Go to Limewire or someplace and download the songs for free so you can hear them. They are classic rock tunes. They are from the early 70's, but still rock. Have fun and GOOD LUCK!

Go to www.licklibrary.com.
Its an online resource for guitarists with tab, and video lessons etc.
Or search for guitar tab on the net and you'll find plenty of sites which you can search for songs you like.
Try these riffs that are fairly easy to pick up for a beginner...
Deep Purple's Smoke on the water - nearly everyone learns this first!!
Metallica's Enter sandman - Picked intro followed by some easy power chords.
Get these nailed and you'll be well away.
Chords and scales are essential to learn but I think its good to get a couple of songs under your belt first off to give you some confidence and the motivation to keep playing. Just plugging away at scales will soon bore you and you might lose interest...

How long it takes to learn guitar depends on how good you want to get and how much practice you put in. How good you can get with 1-2 hours a day for a few months depends on what methods you use to practice. There are effective practice methods that will help you make the best use of your time. This course is one of the best. https://bitly.im/aMSpR It's not just about how much you play but how effectively you play that will determine how good you will get.

Are you playing acoustic? If so, learn to finger-pick "House of the Rising Sun". (You can sing "Amazing Grace" to that tune as well). Only 4 chords. Am-C-D-E (repetitive)
If you go to the following site, scroll to the bottom and you'll find easy f-p tablature for it.
If you're talking about electric, sorry, I wouldn't know what to suggest.

Learn to craw before you learn to walk before you learn to run. Start with learning the major scales in all the keys and octaves, then learn the minor scales in different keys and octaves, then the modes, learn appregiations, tune your fingers and hand muscles before you learn to riff works of music. If you learn progressivly, those riffs are going to be much easier.
