Go the Amtrak website and use their schedule finder. You can take a train from Chicago to Buffalo, NY, then from Buffalo to Toronto. Buffalo is a lot closer to Toronto than Detroit/Windsor. It might actually be faster. I've done this before.

Amtrak used to offer The International between Chicago and Toronto, but that doesn't exist anymore. The only all-train connection would be to take VIA to Montreal, Amtrak to New York, and then a connecting Amtrak train to Chicago. You can also take VIA to either Sarnia or Windsor (Sarnia is easier), cross on your own (by cab or bus) to Port Huron or Detroit, and catch Amtrak to Chicago.

There isn't a direct Chicago-Toronto train anymore.
You can take Amtrak Chicago-Detroit, cab Detroit-Windsor then Via Rail Canada Windsor-Detroit
