My family is planning on going to both Italy and Greece this summer from the U.S. When we thought about how much it will cost to fly from the U.S. to Italy, then to Greece, and then back to the U.S. we weren't sure......

Your best bet is to buy a ticket to Greece with al italia, and ask them if a stop over is allowed. Sometime airlines allow stop overs if you pay a little bit extra. So you fly from U.S to Rome, stay there for as long as you want, fly to Athens and then return straight from Athens.
The problem is buying three one way tickets is absurd. I was looking for a flight from Athens to Toronto return and got a quote from British Airways for 800 Euros. A One way ticket departing with British Airways on the same date was close to 2000 Euros!!! And that is not a mistype.
The only exemption was with the Greek carrier Olympic, a one way ticket was half the price of a return ticket. So what you can do is buy a return ticket from Italy, and one way tickets Rome-Athens and Athens New York or Boston with Olympic.
You final option is to fly to Athens or Rome and then take the train then ferry to Italy or Greece and then back again.

Europe in general is very expensive considering the exchange rate is 1,30 to 1.
There are many variables to your question that one cannot answer properly. For example, I do not know what style of travelling you prefer. If you need to go first class or travel in the back of the bus.
If you do have the time, you could go to Ancona or even Venice and from there take a ferry boat to Greece, which might be a cheaper way than flying and you have the additional advantage of seeing a couple of Greek isles on the way.
Another way would be to choose an all inclusive trip with an Italian Travel agency that specializes in Greek Tours. Usually purchasing a tour of this nature gives you great prices.

Not sure, but whatever it costs it will be more than worth it. Italy is somewhat more expensive than Greece.
