Ok, maybe this is just me being British, but since when did America protect us from anything? According to the right wing lunatics from the Forbes show, or whatever its called, Americas military is wasting billions defendign Europe. Is this just another case of Americans pushing the blame towards other countries, as Obama just metnioned in his rather excellent speech?

Jesus, i think im gonna change the channel. Apparently, 'socialist healthcare' ie, national health services, result in inefficiencies and mass death. Well excuse us for not letting the poor starve to death, i seemed to miss the part where healthcare becme a commodity, and not a Human Right.

The United States spent a considerable amount of blood and treasure helping to defend Europe in the 20th century and continues to do so today. The U.S. intervened in both World Wars. In WWII US policy was to focus on the European theatre first, even though our immediate interests lay in the Pacific, from which we were originally attacked. After WWII the U.S. maintained a large conventional force in Europe, as well as extending the nuclear umbrella over Europe.

We still assist Europe militarily despite the fact that there is no real military threat to the continent. Many of the same bases we had in Germany, the UK, and Italy are still there and are still manned by U.S. soldiers, sailors, marines, and airmen.

I'm not suggesting that it was wrong to help Europe, or that Europe couldn't survive without our help. The British stood alone against the Nazis before either the Soviets or the U.S. entered WWII. But you can't deny that the U.S. has paid a great deal to help Europe.

As for the socialized medicine, well, to many of us in the U.S. it *is* properly seen as a commodity. That's a philosophical argument, and my response is already too long to cover it. I don't think you can dispute that socialized medicine causes inefficiencies. Now, those inefficiencies may be an acceptable cost to pay in exchange for fairness or social justice, but that doesn't mean the inefficiencies don't exist. When a service becomes available without any immediate cost associated with it, the demand is going to be excessive. That's a cause of inefficiency right there.

Several years ago thousands of people were killed on American soil and the military's headquarters was attacked. Many in America believe that there are many more in this world who want to do this again to us, along with other targets in the rest of the western world. A dictator in the middle east, who used wmd's to kill thousands (possibly hundreds of thousands), who hated us, and was the type of person who would do this to us, was snubbing U.N. inspecters. We took that guy out with little help from many of the larger countries in Europe. Even if he wasn't an eminent threat he would have been a terrible threat to the world soon. Many European countries do not spend much on the military. I feel they don't realize the great, and often hard to detect, threat coming from Islamic extremists. America is spending great amounts of lives and money to fight this threat. As for national health care, all of the good intentions don't mean anything if national health care is shown to hurt more than it helps. Did everyone on the Forbes show have that opinion? I bet not. But Fox tries to show everyside.

Your first mistake was confusing Faux News with real news. Everyone in this country already knows Faux is just a Republican Propaganda Machine and we don't take anything they say serious. America has never protected anyone. During WW2 they were protecting their own interests only after being attacked at Pearl Harbor. Prior to this they wanted to let the rest of the world do the fighting.
