I am a 32 year old mom in Texas with two small children, so maybe I am a little out of touch here! I am hearing and reading about it and have no clue what it is. Someone even mentioned cutting themselves! Is it scary?

Goth is nothing like Emo, Goths are normal happy people who smile alot who do not cut themselves, are not depressed and don't worship satan, they don't always wear black, they don't drink blood and hate the world. That is all Sterotypes of goths and wannabes

Emos are people who do cut themselves and are depressed, they are cry babys who complain about their lives and do nothing about it. Some people are emo just because they think it's cool.

Also it's a type of music and clothing style

History in music
Main article: Emo (music)

1980s
Emo was not always used as slang referring to a subculture. The term was born in the 1980s to describe a genre of music stemming from the hardcore punk music scene in Washington, D.C. Early bands labeled emo (or sometimes emocore) in this scene included Rites of Spring, Embrace, and Fugazi.[2][4][5]

1990s to present
The word has more recently been used to describe a subculture as a slang term, but still describes a music genre as well. The term emo as a music genre has become broader and broader with time, and now is loosely understood to mean "rock music with emotionally-based lyrics or effect." Bands included in the genre range from Bright Eyes to The Get Up Kids to Sunny Day Real Estate. The term is so loosely defined because its definition is still the subject of debate.[1][2][4] Emo now often refers to a person's fashion, personality, or both, as well as the music genre.

Fashion
Emo fashion is usually defined to have roots in punk fashion as well as gothic fashion.[3] By almost all current definitions, emo clothing is characterized by tight jeans on males and females alike, long bangs often brushed to one side of the face, dyed black hair, tight t-shirts (often bearing the names of emo bands), studded belts, belt buckles, Chuck Taylor All-Stars or other black shoes (often old and beaten up), and thick, black-rimmed glasses

Past emo trends
Emo fashion has changed with time; early trends included haircuts similar to those worn by the Romulans and Vulcans in Star Trek, tightly fitting sweaters, button-down shirts, and work jackets (often called gas station jackets). These trends are not as popular in the emo scene anymore.[6]

Personality
When referring to a person's personality and attitude, most definitions of emo hold that an "emo person" is candid about their emotions, sensitive, shy, introverted, broken-hearted, glum, and often quiet.[7][10]

Self-harm and emo
Some definitions of emo hold that a typical "emo person" is likely to inflict self-injury, most often by means of cutting, burning, or otherwise mutilating themself

Most Emos I knew are retards who think it's cool to be like that.

Young ones, lost, trying to find themselves? I didn't know if I should have put a playing card on the spokes of my bike, or play lite brite. My mom, hip for being a mom, let me decide, no ridicule. Parents have a lot of influence on their children, but pressure by same age friends have some also. If your children don't have enough "trust in you" they will fall in with anyone who thinks they are "COOL", you are the the mom that WILL make a difference in their lives, and they may find out to late, but they will find out. Do you want your grand babies to learn the same lesson? Sorry, but society now a days plays a big roll, and that frightens me. I am not a mom, but have nieces and nephews galore. 5 of us, 20 years looking at everyone growing up seeing good/bad, and loving some of the outcome, because how the parents interacted with their children my nieces and nephews. Love always♥ for my family so strong.
