A skinwalker is not a windtalker or a skywalker. A windtalker is a military code talker, and a skywalker is a construction worker. Both are good things to be.
A skinwalker is a certain type of shaman, in the Dineh tradition, who misuses his powers to harm others. There is more I could say but there are certain things best not talked about publicly. However if you search on the terms you could probably find more info online.
PS -- Dineh is the term that the people commonly known as Navaho refer to themselves. Navaho is an exonymn assigned by a neighboring tribe, and, like many exonymns, it has ill connotations. If you use Dineh (and variations on the spelling) in your search you are more likely to turn up results written by knowledgeable people.

Fiona has a really great explanation, this is coming from myself and my BF, who if full Navajo and grew up on the Navajo Rez. The only thing he has to add is that any wild animal skin can be used in addition to coyotes. Wolves, bear and dear skins can be used as well. The name "Navajo" comes from a longer Spanish phrase "Apaches de Navajo" that was used by the Spaniards, if I remember correctly, to describe the Navajo (Dine) or sometimes the similar Apaches (Ndéé). The White Mountain Apaches call the Diné "Yudaha" which very loosely translates to "from up north."

Isn't that from one of Tony Hillerman's mystery books and the Hillerman PBS series?
A Pueblo might say all Skinwalkers are Navaho.

I think you mean the Navajo Skywalkers. They had such incredible balance ! They were hired to build skyscrapers. They could work twenty stories up and walk on beams about as wide as your hand without any supports of any kind. Not only could they walk those narrow beams, but they could carry supplies at the same time. Not a one ever fell. Me??? I can't even go up a ladder without getting dizzy !!
