When people refer to wireless, they're commonly referring to a wireless LAN inside their house (or business, etc.) Other than the cost for the hardware (wireless router and wireless cards) there is no recurring cost; Once you buy the hardware, you're done.

Now wireless internet service is another thing. You do pay a monthly fee for that.

Wireless LAN allows you to have computers at several locatiosn in your home/business without having to run network lines to each. It broadcasts the internet signals over radio waves.
