San Diego is a coastal Southern California city located in the southwestern corner of the continental United States. As of 2005, the city has a population of 1,255,540 people. It is the second largest city in California and the eighth largest in the United States.[1] It is the county seat of San Diego County.GR6 The San Diego metropolitan area has over 2.9 million people while the larger metropolitan area, which includes Tijuana, Mexico, is the 21st-largest in the Americas, with a population over 4.8 million.

San Diego lies just north of the Mexican border (shares border with Tijuana, Mexico) and lies south of Orange County. It is home to miles of beaches, a mild Mediterranean climate and multiple military institutions, such as the United States Navy, the United States Coast Guard and the United States Marine Corps.

The University of California, San Diego (UCSD) and the affiliated UCSD Medical Center combined with nearby research institutes in the Torrey Pines area of La Jolla, provide a base for technological innovation. San Diego's economy is largely composed of agriculture, biotechnology/biosciences, computer sciences, electronics manufacturing, defense-related manufacturing, financial and business services, ship-repair and construction, software devlopment, telecommunications and tourism

San Diego is a city at the south end of the state of California, right on the coast, about two hours drive south of Los Angeles, and only a few minutes north of Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico.

It's latitude and longitude are 32°46'46" N 117°8'47" W (for downtown).

By population, it is the 8th largest city in the US, and the 2nd largest city in California. The most prominent industries of San Diego are: biosciences (biology, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology), telecommunications (many cell phone makers have development labs here, and chip maker Qualcomm is headquartered here), defense (we have several Navy and Marine bases as well as shipbuilding and aeronautics businesses), tourism (because of the climate and scenery, we have a lot of hotels, conventions and attractions to draw visitors) and trade (there's a lot of commerce that travels from Mexico to the US through our border port of entry), education (we have a top notch public university that does a lot of biological research, UC San Diego, as well as San Diego State University (public), and several private colleges and universities.

Some of our other specialties are fish tacos (a local San Diego cuisine, that started in Baja), Karl Strauss beer (a local microbrewery, and a poorly managed city government (several scandals in the local political scene have hurt our city), and a great outdoor lifestyle -- there are lots of places to run, bike, swim, surf, play golf or tennis, walk your dog, and enjoy the sun.
