I'll answer that with another question...
Would you like me to tell the world you have haemorroids? Or that your brother has a criminal record for exposing himself in public?
Apart from some problems being embarrassing enough for us to not want to share them, the main reason is so that people are treated equally especially regarding insurance, job prospects, and how they are viewed by others.

In the old days we had Family Doctors who related to the whole families health and would ask how you were all keeping. This was very good because families interact with each other and if one is under stress it can effect the others. It was also helpful for the GP to ask how little johnny was and show a general interest in the families health and welfare. Now of course with all the new directives and 'PC' boundaries, this connection has sadly gone. In any event the government is bent on destroying all that we have that is good in the health service for the sake of profit. Confidentiality is not as important as the welfare of the patient and his family. We have to have it to avoid litigation from greedy lawyers who also crave profits. Because we have a system based on money and not care.

All the responses you have got here are good ones and supported well with good consideration ......
I would like to add further to this ......
Confidentiality is the protection of your privacy for a number of reasons - it can affect 1. your ability to be employed - 2.therefore your income, 3. your relationships with other people - be they family or friends or your social environment, 4. therefore YOUR quality of life, 5. it can prevent emotional breakdown either in the patient or the family, 7. it can prevent or alleviate serious health issues, violence issues, sexual and criminal activity issues, parental issues, marriage issues ....7. it gives you the chance and the right to be treated 'normally' - without the pressure or judgment of others ......
afterall there are many people with a whole host of 'quirks' which, unless we are aware of them, don't affect us or the way we think about those people - because we don't know about them ...... confidentiality means THEY don't have to know about US - unless we tell them.....

Nowadays there is no way of avoiding imparting a lot of highly personal information to other people with whom we are obligated to have some official dealings. Can't keep from it. Those individuals, or bodies of people are, and should rightly be, charged with the care and preservation of that personal knowledge about us, using it solely for the purpose for which it was gathered in the first place; nor allow it, by deliberate act, or negligence, to fall into the hands of others who have no legitimate right to that information.
The same rules should apply to all areas of our private data, which these days is contained in hundreds of computers operated by hundreds of agencies. There's no hiding place any more, and all combined, these agencies know more about us than we can even remember about ourselves LOL. They are the custodians of it, and we all know that some of it, if it gets into the hands of the wrong people, could be unlawfully used in ways that would cause that person irreparable harm.

Because people trust doctors and if there were no confidentiality issues, then maybe they would not go to the doctor if they knew the news would be shared.
Would you like it if you had a medical problem and they discussed it with others like it was their business too?

Making a person's health and social status public knowledge inhibits that individual to earn a living. Companies with access to that kind of information would have the ability to discriminate against those with healthcare issues or a history of social assistance. Yes, thats illegal...but it would be necessary for the individual to prove that they have been discriminated against...virtually impossible!

If there wasn't confidentiality it would undermine the confidence of the person who was perhaps receiving treatment for an ailment that would jeopardise his status or indeed cause him to be relieved of his position

People in need of the care would lose trust in the people that were offering help to them if their problems were discussed in public. Then they would be out of a job because no-one would use them.
