The window regulator, the door lock and the loudspeaker are secured to the carrier assembly.

If power windows cannot be lowered then the cause of the malfunction must be determined first. Check the comfort locking system Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory (address word 461 with VAG 1551 scan tool.

If you have the mk5 Golf the whole outer doorskin has to be removed as you cannot gain access from the inside of the door. This isn't as bad as it sounds, the outer handle needs removing then the skin is held on with torx bolts around the edge.
If you have a mk4 you need to remove the inner door trim and remove the bolts all around the edge of the big metal plate, however to remove it you also need to take out the door lock mechanism at the same time and you also need to make sure the glass is released from the rgulator.
Best to get this done proffesionally as it's easy when you know how but a pain to do for the first time.
Hope this helps

If you're preparing to do this yourself, spend the money on a Haynes manual with photographs and full instructions.
I've always bought a Haynes Manual when I bought a car and they've never let me down.
Since you haven't given year, check the link below for the manual you require.

It is attatched to the door skin which is metal , you will see 10mm nuts all around the outer edge of the inner skin then the whole unit comes away , bear in mind you will have to remove the door panel first. e-mail me if you get stuck.
