Originally The Velvet Underground, but then came along The Ramones!!! the true originators of PUNK!!!... Sex Pistols were more about fashion than music... In my opinion, The Pistols were the first Boy Band... they were put together by Malcolm McClaren and Vivien Westwood... they did not come together like a proper band... When we come to bands like M.C.R. and Greenday...THEY ARE NOT PUNK!!!!! so wake up to the brilliance of The Ramones kiddies!!!!!! The Ramones came over to England and showed bands like The Clash, The Jam, etc. that you don't have to be musical geniuses to have a great band... So The Ramones started it all so there you go!!! GABBA GABBA HEY!!!!!

Old The Clash or Dead Kennedys
new... not many decent punk bands left maybe Billy Talent, or The Gallows. (if u havent heard them go listen they are awesome)
also i know this is gonna annoy some people but althought the Sex Pistols "started" punk they only relased ONE studio album so they are hardly the greatest ever.

Real punk is dead. The likes of Green Day and MCR is just hyped up pop rock.

By the way, Trivium Wiccanteen: Judas Priest is heavy metal, NOT punk.

Actually the Who are considered the originators of punk rock. The song "My Generation" is considered a punk rock classic.

Without a doubt, Greenday, politically as well as musically. I'd really like to say either Ian Dury and the Blockheads, or maybe The Boomtown Rats - but that just wouldn't be true :(
