I was thinking of this song a while ago, and wondered who had done this version for the commercial. I don't remember what the product was, but it might have been for some kind of IT consulting or software product.

Natobanato, I almost gave you best answer, but then again, anyone can look on Wikipedia. You gave some info I didn't realize, but you didn't really give me what I want. The Wikipedia article mentions the IBM Lotus commercial but doesn't say who it was that sang it. I really want to know some more info about this particular cover (even if someone else besides R.E.M. originally did the song).

The group the clique' were actually the first to sing Superman - they actually wrote the song. R.E.M. picked it up because Peter Buck listened to obscure music - basically "the clique" had not made it famous at all. Hence, R.E.M. covered it and was more popular but not a "hit" as in high on the Billboard charts.
A band covered this again in the series "Lois and Clark"
The band that covered it; to my knowledge was Moby Grape. However see the article about it on Wikipedia.

***Wikipedia also says that the commerical featured a female vocalist. Maybe it was just done by an unknown, voice over lady...
