what part of indian culture makes them always want to get the best deal on things, no matter what effect it has on other people or businesses?

they come in to my store and bargain me down ALL day.. stuff is clearly marked with a price and they do not give up. i even caught two of them slapping hands right behind my back because they got a 5 dollar discount out of me on an item

at the same time, they are the biggest proprieters of small business and obviously know the costs of keeping a place running.. i have never gone to a 7-11 trying to get half off on a newspaper or a pack of cigs.

I guess what i'm saying is they try and get you with their pricing yet they refuse to pay yours. they are scrapin both sides of the field and saving every bit they can. they come here to be economically secure but they are sinking a tremendous amount of money out of our economy. i'd just like to know what's behind it.

thank you - and just to clear things up, my goal is to learn, not offend

They consider themselves very savvy business people, and if they can save a little here and there that makes them one step closer to obtaining their financial goals....I think in a way they are very smart, because they live with the mere necessities of life in order to obtain their ultimate goal of financial security....unlike us, they are not very materialistic, when it comes to buying every new technological big ticket items, those are wants not needs...so by living with just the basic necessities, they save for the future, unlike us who like to be the first to have whatever new gadget comes out. I am not offending them in anyway, since I think that they have the self discipline we lack, but I can't say that it doesn't annoy me at times also. I hope this sort of helps you understand.

Its funny that you ask that question. Well, being indian myself and having grown up in AMerica, I've seen both sides. In India, the currency is Rupee, and it doesnt go far spending like the American dollar. I hear so many stories from American's that they are knee deep in debts. Indians tend to save every penny for the future of their children, business and retirement. I remember when I was younger, my mother did the same, but if you think about it, how many times did you wear one outfit before you outgrew it??? Why spend the money if its only going to be worn a time or two. In high school, my parents could afford the high brand names and also send me to college, and buy a car for me. This is why Indians save every penny....for their children. I hope this answer was helpful. Let me know if yo have any further questions.

I don't know, but I wonder this myself. I had a rather frustrating incident at my vet clinic, where an Indian man and his mother, wanted to bargain and argue about the cost of everything, even though he already had a rather signifigant discount from the rescue where he got his puppy.

Shame on you for giving them that 5 dollar discount in the first place, They also get free medical care for their kids, when they can afford to pay for it.
