Depending on your computer usage habits - it may be some sort of spyware infestation. If you've installed alot of software and devices they sometimes can slow it down.

My advice is always to back up the computer and settings, and reinstall from scratch. It's a pain, but it gets the best results when speed and efficiency are the concern.

Check the task manager (ctrl-alt-del) and check the processes - you might find a program or two that are the culprits.

If you have less than 512MB of ram, i'd upgrade. That almost always will speed up a computer since the machine won't have to use virtual memory and hit the hard drive.

It's a dell what did you expect!

Try defragging the hard drive, turn off useless junk like wallpaper, screensavers and anything in the start up that isn't needed; add more ram, delete your temp files, clear out your internet cache folder, scan fr spyware and other goodies and above all else don't ever buy a dell again.

First of all breath......now click start, programs, accessories, system tools and finally disk clean-up.When this finishes,go to start, programs, accessories, system tools and your final step, disk defrag.click defrag. When this finishes okay.....wait until it finishes. Now right click on my computer and then properties.......I recommend at least 512mb of ram to run xp.It'll run with stock 256 but yeah it'll drag off and on so simply buy a stck of 256 or even better 512 would give you the bump you're looking for.So much can be done but it depends on money princess. You can upgrade your board etc just depends on what you want to do.One last thing, always and I mean always use virus protection to help with spyware adware and to kill off pc viruses. They too will slow your com down.Take care.

i have a dell to any i am on it almost everyday.
if you are on it everyday it might be that because sometimes it can lose more power that way and then you have to get a new cartage or something. or your computer might have a virus sometimes that can be it too. and you can not see it but it can make your computer slower or do something to the program. hope this helps and you fix it.

a few things can be done like was is your antivirus program with mcafee is ok but with norton it too slow.
a defrag disk can help too
maybe too many programs start on start up so it take most of the memory.
