it has the fancy designed wafer on the front, like 7 in a row-- and it has a key-- my gas has been turned on, but I have no idea how to work this heater or if it's really even safe... any ideas....

wall mounted heaters used to be quite common but are becoming a rarity (thankfully) today. The concern is in whether this heater is a Vented appliance or an unvented one. The probability that yours is unvented (meaning it dumps its exhaust into the room with you) is pretty high which means your potential for exposure to high and potentially lethal levels of CO (Carbon Monoxide) is also high.
Have it looked at by someone knowledgable to ensure that it vents ALL the way outside (not just into the wall cavity or attic) and install a CO detector in the room if you decide to use it.

Get a gas tech to completely check it out and then use it!

Get it checked - even if it appears to work OK it could be giving off carbon monoxide, which is colourless and odourless, so you wouldn't know, but which could potentially kill you.
