usually on live plants- if you dont want them, dont use snail killer since it can cause problems with other life forms...just get a botia or a clown loach, they loooooove snails...

Its because for some odd reason a single snail can reproduce again and again and again.....

Also, snails can be microscopic and found on live plants that you may have had in your aquarium.

The proof of this is the 100's of snails my bf has had to remove from our tank in the last 2 months due to snail infested live plants.... He also threw ONE snail into a vase with a plant and there are now close to 15 in it.

if you put any plants in the water there was probably snail's on the plants. I would suggest getting some snail killer from the pet store and putting it in. Follow the directions and wait the proper time before you add fish again.

Sorry to hear about your fish.

There could be a few reasons they showed up in your tank.

If you purchased plants and did not clean them prior to placing them into your tank.

If you used someone else's filter or gravel to try to cycle your tank

Eggs could have hitched a ride in the water you brought home from the pet store.
This could have happend from the get go, and depending on the type of snail, have been reproducing since.

If you wish to get rid of them, Asside from picking each and every one out, the easiest way is to weight down a piece of lettuce in the tank. The next morning it will be coverd with snails, either remove them, contain them or well you know.

Snails usually appear when the water gets warm and scum type. That may be because the snails appeared do to the remaining fecials of fish and their rotten parts

Does your tank have live plants in it? Many times they can carry snails so small you won't notice them until they get bigger.

Snails do not form in water, just like maggots do not form on raw meat.

No but they do start very small and grow quick, they also breed quite quickly. Most likely explaination is that there were eggs which have since hatched.
